Virtual Server 2005 R2の上でRedHat9をインストールした時、
/etc/X11/XF86Configは下記のような設定で
800x600 256色のXを動かすことができました。

要は、インストールのデフォルトの設定で、
800x600 256色 にしておけばよいだけです。

CentOS4でも同様な設定でうごきました。

その点、VMWareは楽なのかもしれません。
